We are starting a separate listing of some of the well known and not so well known Sunnah (practices of the Holy Prophet Muhammad [SWS]) in a heading called 'Sunnah Practices' for people who would like to take the blessing and benefit of practicing these valuable, and much over looked, practices in these modern times.
The first one was emailed by Baji Shenaz, via Syed Khalid Hussain, about the order of cutting nails.
Sheikh Nazim recommends to cut nails on Monday & Thursdays and preferably before sunset. The clippings should also be buried in the earth for the best benefit.
If you know of any Sunnah, from both strong and weaker Hadith, which you think will benefit others please leave a comment below.

Sufi Meditation (Zikr) - Thursday - 18 December 2008
Mashallah, Mashallah, Mashallah! Alhamdulillah it was such a good feeling to see and with old friends, Haji Uncle Saeed (who also came back from Hajj recently) and especially brother Aslam and sister Shenaz - who support this Zikr gathering every week. Thank you to all the brothers from East London who came to attend especially for this evening's Zikr.
Thank you to everyone who attended tonight. It was nice to speak to brother Ali, from Turkey, who found us from Meetup.com and it was his first Zikr in London. There was a quite a gathering tonight (see photos) with special un-announced guest Sidi Abdullah Trevathan (of the Retreat Series shown on BBC 2 and of the Qadiri Bushishi Tariqa) who blessed us with his presence.
Sheikh Mikail lead a heartfelt, deep and immersive connecting Zikr tonight with the blessings of our Sheikh, Sheikh Nazim Al-Haqqani. Very hard to translate the feeling - you have to attend to experience it. It was also very nice to see and hear sheikh Jaffar's dua, who normally attends the Zikr at St.Anne's, Sheikh Nazim's Dergah in Seven Sisters.
Apologies for the two guests that came in earlier, as sister Hina arrived, but left shortly after the prayers were completed. I am sorry no one explained to you the proceedings and schedule. We need to arrange some sort message for visitors to inform of them of the programme of events in the evening which they can read and not think we are being rude by not speaking whilst praying.
If anyone sees anyone new or unfamiliar at the Zikr, please, please make them feel welcome and explain to them the schedule of events for the evening. They are generally, prayer first, then Zikr and ending with food. Pretty simple really people, so don't be shy!
Sister Shenaz has suggested to make the Zikr available via webcam so we are investigating this for next week inshallah. We will need help from Uncle Amjud inshallah.
Of course, not forgetting Auntie Farida (Mashallah, who came back from Hajj - Jazakhallah for all your prayers Auntie for everyone), Rahil and family for providing all the food and cake - it was, as usual, great chicken curry with rice and delicious cake (not as good as Yamin's Paul of course!).
Inshallah, we will see everyone for a special, special Zikr on Christmas Day evening and celebrate and give thanks for a very timely Zikr on such a remembered day.
BTW, salaams to everyone who couldn't attend or was travelling (brother Galib-we missed you tonight - especially Mother!) and hope brother Yamin gets better soon. Yamin, you need looking after Yamin!

Sufi Zikr Meditation - Thursday - 11 December 2008
Thank you to everyone that attended tonight and it was very nice to see both familiar and new faces. It was a cold 4 degrees this evening but we still had a very good turn out so thank you to everyone for making a special effort because you could've stayed in doors watching the telly!
Alhamdulillah, the Zikr was very rewarding and intense in parts and we all benefited from the blessings of brother Nadeem leading the Zikr and Abdul Hakim making the journey from south London. The short naats at the end are always sweet by brother Nadeem.
We hope both Bashir and Jennifer enjoyed their first Sufi Zikr Meditation session and appreciate any comments you have by clicking comments below. Everyone that visited the first time today we didn't get a chance to speak to is also welcome any Thursday evening.
Jazakhallah to brother Rahil for the delicious food (also brother Yamin for dishing out the food and his 'consultancy' eloquence too) and we missed brothers Galib & Omar who didn't make it today due to travelling and probably working late.
Inshallah, we shall see both brother Aslam and baji Shenaz next week as they should be touching down this week.
Salaams and see you all next week.

Dhul Hijjah - First 10 Days - 1st Dhul Hijja 29 November 2008
Imam Ghazali (KS) said in Ihya' `Ulum al-Din: "Fasting is definitely desirable in certain meritorious days, some of them being found in every year, others in every month, and others in every week. Those that are found in every year after the days of Ramadan are:
- the Day of `Arafa [= 9th of Dhul Hijja]
- the Day of `Ashura' [= 10th of Muharram]
- the first Ten Days of Dhu al-Hijja
- the first ten days of Muharram
And all the sacred months are preferred for fasting... and they are:
Dhu al-Qi`da, Dhu al-Hijja, Muharram, and Rajab."
FIRST TEN DAYS AND NIGHTS OF DHUL HIJJA
`Abd Allah ibn Mas`ud (RA) said: The Prophet (SWS) said: "There are no days in the year in which deeds are more meritorious than in the Ten Days [i.e. the first ten days of Dhu al-Hijja]."
Someone asked: "Not even Jihad in the path of Allah?" He replied: "Not even Jihad in the path of Allah." Haythami said: "Tabarani narrated it in al-Mu`jam al-kabir and the narrators in its chain of transmission are all those of sound (Sahih) narrations.
The nights are included in the mention of the days. Allah swore an oath by them when He said: "By the Dawn! By Ten Nights!" (89:1-2) and the authors of Tafsir al-Jalalayn said: "They are the first ten nights of Dhul Hijja."
`EID AL-ADHA (FEAST OF SACRIFICE)
The `Eid prayer is a Sunna Mu'akkada or confirmed Sunna and is recommended to be prayed in congregation. It is wajib (obligatory) in the Hanafi madhhab and therefore required of every person who is required to perform Jum`a, i.e. healthy male residents of the region in which it is performed.
It is highly recommended and Sunna on Eid to listen to both of the Khutbahs given by the Imam on the day of Eid because your Eid prayer will not be completed without you listening to them.
It is a Sunna Mu'akkada and, in the Hanafi Madhhab, a wajib, for every adult Muslim man and woman to sacrifice at least one shat -- a sheep or a goat -- for `Eid al-Adha. This may be done any time after the prayer on the first day of `Eid until sunset on the last of the two days following the first day. One may have someone else perform the sacrifice on his behalf, whether in his presence or in absence.
It is recommended not to eat anything on the day of `Eid al-Adha until one perform the Prayer.
It is recommended to perform Ghusl (major ablution) before the prayer, any time after Fajr even if one does not attend the prayer.
It is recommended for men to dress their best and wear perfume. It is Sunna to come to the mosque early and on foot, and to return home by a different route. It is preferable for a `Eid Congregation to pray outdoors.

Sufi Meditation (Zikr) - Thursday - 27 November 2008
Jazakhallah to everyone that attended this evening. Without you all the Zikr would not be the same so may Allah Almighty bless and reward you here and hereafter.
Alhamdulillah, we had sheikh Abdul Hakim visit us from South London and lead the Zikr this evening and we were treated to a Holy resonating Zikr. It was pleasurable to start with Salawat so Jazakhallah for that old time addition.
We welcomed brother Suhail, his first time in a Zikr association, who drove from Hertfordshire and look forward to seeing him again. Thank you to also sister Gulnaz who attended before and hope you found the Zikr beneficial. Jazakhallah to everyone that manage to attend regularly.
Jazakhallah to uncle Amjudgul for his lovely rice, chicken and bean curry and the delicious chocolate chip brownies were made by sister Sarah Chowdury (amended). Mashallah the group is always spoiled with both brother Rahil's and Yamin's generosity with either outstanding cooking from Rahil and Auntie Farida or Yamin's 'baker' treats of deserts, so jazakhallah to you both and may Allah Almighty reward you all here and herafter.
Inshallah, sheikh Nadeem will be back next week and we prayed for his father's health and full recovery. Inshallah sheikh Mikhail may even come so we can hear a rhythmical 'duff' inspired Zikr with maybe a little 'Hadra' thrown in! Are you up for that?
Inshallah, keep well, safe and see you all next week.

Prayers for All - Prayers for Hard Times
You may find this message a timely reminder for us all.
=====================================
Prayer for All
Allah Almighty always has three replies to our Dua/Prayers
1) 'Yes'
2) 'Yes, but not now'
3) 'I have a better plan for you'
There's never a 'NO'....just have faith and keep praying.
This is an awesome prayer .
Believe it and you shall be blessed even more.
The problem with many of us is that we don't believe that God will open a window and pour out blessings that we won't have room to receive them. I dare anyone to try God. He is true to His word. God does not lie and His promises are sure. Three things will happen to you this coming week, Insha'Allah:
(1) You will find favour with someone you don't expect;
(2) You will be too relevant to be ignored;
(3) You will encounter God and you will never remain the same again.
Prayer for you today:
The eyes beholding this message shall not behold evil, the hands that send this message to others shall not labor in vain, the mouth saying 'Ameen' to this prayer shall know laughter. Remain in God's love as you send this prayer to everybody on your list. Have a lovely journey of life! Trust in Allah with all your heart and He will never fail you because He is the Greatest, Most Generous, Most Merciful.
If you truly need a blessing, continue reading this email:
Allah Huma Salle Ala Muhammdin Wa-Ale Alihi Wa Sahibihi Wa Sal-lam (SWS)
Ya Allah, most Gracious and Loving God, I pray to You that You abundantly bless my family and me. I know that you recognize, that a family is more than just a mother, father, sister, brother, husband and wife, but all who believe and trust in you. Oh Allah, I send up a prayer request for Your blessings not only on the person who sent this message to me, but for all those whom I have forwarded this message on to and myself. I am also aware that the power of joint prayers by those who believe and trust in You is more powerful than anything. I thank you always for Your blessings.
Almighty Allah, deliver the person reading this right now from sickness both from spiritual and physical being, oppression, from wickedness and any evil plotted against them, anxiety, debt and debt's burdens. Release Your Godly wisdom that we may be good stewards over all that You have given us Ya Allah, for I know how wonderful and Almighty You are.
Ya Rabbul Alameen, I am also fully conscious of the fact that if we just obey You and walk in Your way, that You have shown to us, you will pour out your endless blessings on us. I thank you now Allah for the recent blessings I have received and for the blessings yet to come because I know you have not closed your favours to me. In your name I pray,
Innaka Alaa Kulle Shay-in Kadeer. Ameen .
Take 60 Seconds and send this on quickly and within hours, you will have caused a multitude of people to pray to God for each other. Then sit back and watch the power of Allah work in your life for doing the thing that you know He loves.
May Allah bless the person and whoever forwards this message. AMEEN

Laylatul Qadr - The Night of Power - The last 10 Days of Ramadan
The Prophet Muhammad (Peace & Blessing upon them) said, “Whoever prays on Laylat al-Qadr out of faith and sincerity, shall have all their past sins forgiven.” [Bukhari and Muslim, from Abu Hurayra (RA)]
The Prophet (Peace & Blessing upon them) also said, “Seek it in the last ten days, on the odd nights.” [Bukhari and Muslim from Abu Sa`id al-Khudri (RA)]
The scholars affirm that it is the best of nights, [al-Fatawa al-Hindiyya, quoting Mi`raj al-Diraya, 1.216] because of Allah Most High’s words,
“Lo! We revealed it on the Night of Power.
Ah, what will convey unto thee what the Night of Power is!
The Night of Power is better than a thousand months.
The angels and the Spirit [Jibril/Gabriel (AS)] descend therein, by the permission of their Lord, will all decrees.
(That night is) Peace until the rising of the dawn.”
(Qur’an, Surat al-Qadr: 97)
Imam Nawawi (KS) and others explain that ‘The Night of Power is better than a thousand months,’ means that it is better than a thousand months without it.
Given the immensity of this night, it is recommended to seek this night, and to worship Allah in it, with prayer, supplication (du`a), remembrance (Zikr/dhikr), and other actions. [Ibn Abidin, Radd al-Muhtar, quoting Mi`raj al-Diraya, and Nawawi, al-Majmu`(KS)]
When is Laylatul Qadr - The Night of Power?
In general, it is agreed that it is most likely to be in the last ten nights of Ramadan, with the odd nights being more likely. Of the odd nights, the night of the 27th (which is the night before the 27th of Ramadan, for the Islamic day starts with nightfall) is most likely. Imam Shafi`i(RA) said that it is most likely to be the 21st, then the 23rd, then the 27th. Imam Nawawi(KS) followed the position of Imam Muzani and Imam Ibn Khuzayma(KS) that it moves around within the last ten nights. [Nawawi, al-Majmu` Sharh al-Muhadhdhab(KS), 6.488]
However, it could be outside the last ten nights within Ramadan. It may even be outside Ramadan according to both early and late scholars. This has been transmitted from many of the Companions of the Prophet (Peace & Blessing upon them), including Ibn Mas`ud (RA). It is one of the reported positions of Imam Abu Hanifa(RA), and also of many of the great knowers of Allah, including Ibn Arabi (whose position is quoted by Ibn Abidin with support), Abu’l Hasan al-Shadhili, Sha`rani(KS), and many others.
May Allah give us the success of following in the footsteps of the inheritors of the Prophet (Allah bless him & give him peace), outwardly and inwardly, and may He make us of those whom He loves, forgives and supports here and hereafter.
This is one of the many reasons why one should strive to establish the night vigil prayer (Tahajjud), daily.

Laylatul Qadr - The Night of Power - Talk by Sheikh Nazim
Nights are the time which Allah `azza wa jalla has designated for the attainment of spiritual blessing and power. Allah told His Beloved in the Quran: Rise to pray in the night except a little (73:1)
Allah ordered Prophet (SWS) to spend most of the night in worship in order to prepare his heart for the tremendous revelation of Quran. This night worship was the means for the Prophet (SWS) to ascend and to attain more and more power. His Companions (RA) would join him for the night prayer and would be rising up in station and spirituality:
Surely We will make to descend on you a weighty Word. Surely the rising by night is the firmest way to tread and the best corrective of speech. (73, 1-5) |
Laylat al-Qadr is a holy night. All nights of Ramadan are holy nights but Laylat al-Qadr is the holiest night of this holy month. It is also the holiest night among all other holy nights throughout the entire year. It comes only once a year and Allah Almighty grants to His most praised, most respected and most beloved servant Sayyidina Muhammad (SWS) this holy night, the Night of Power. About this night, God, the Glorious and Exalted said:
In the name of God, the Beneficent the Merciful |
"Night of Power" is a very strange translation for "Laylat al-Qadr" but it attributes to it a good meaning: whoever may attain the blessings of this holy night should attain perfect power in his spiritual life. One can attain perfect power by means of this night because its value is more than one thousand months of worshiping. Every worship performed increases the spiritual power of people and in this night any worship is going to be valued as one thousand months of worshiping on any other night. It is condensed power. God, the Almighty, makes it a mighty night by placing in it such incredible power, making it a much mightier night than other nights. Allah Almighty says it is much more valuable than one thousand months of worshiping. That means Allah Almighty granted such huge power to that night.
It is just such a mighty night which is highly respected and given such a high value by the Lord Almighty. It is so mighty that it is said that it is the most mighty night, that Night of Power. Allah Almighty puts in it power for His servants to come closer to His Divine Presence. In a short time a that great power adorns worshipers in this night and they may be able to penetrate through the entire heavens and reach the Divine Presence.
People on this night are going to be on several different levels. No doubt we are on the lowest level, so we are hoping in this night to attain the honor and illumination granted in it. When we reach a higher level and as it is a holy night in the heavens as well, we will begin to sense something [of the great power being manifested] on this night. Whoever is at the highest spiritual level must be present for this night in the Divine Presence of the Lord.
That appearance will occur in a matter of seconds, perhaps within a single second. Perhaps one second is an enormous unit of time [in comparison] to that moment. It may be more than a second or much less, but it is an instant in time when an appearance from Divine Presence is manifested to creation. When that Divine Appearance manifests (Ar. tajalli), no one will remain standing throughout the heavens and the earth. Everything falls into prostration, throwing themselves down in prostration for that moment. That manifestation of Divine Power--that Divine Light--appears, and whoever is prepared and who has also been invited to attend that appearance sees it and falls in prostration. Everything in that moment falls in prostration (Ar. sajda): all animals--even ants, even elephants, even giraffes, even dogs--on that night they are not sleeping but are hurrying to make prostration on experiencing that divine manifestation. All trees-- even buildings--bow down in prostration and then rise up to their original positions. This is mentioned in Quran:
And unto Allah falleth prostrate whosoever is in the heavens and the earth, willingly or unwillingly, as do their shadows in the morning and the evening hours. (ar-R`ad, 15) |
and
Hast thou not seen that unto Allah payeth adoration whosoever is in the heavens and whosoever is in the earth, and the sun, and the moon, and the stars, and the hills, and the trees, and the beasts, and many of mankind, while there are many unto whom the doom is justly due. He whom Allah scorneth, there is none to give him honour. Lo! Allah doeth what He will.(al-Hajj, 18) |
May God forgive us because we are sinners. Every few minutes, or even every few seconds we commit so many sins, thus we are in need of our Lord's forgiveness for the honor of His Most Praised Servant Sayyidina Muhammad, peace and blessings of God be upon him. This holiest of nights is granted to him from his Lord Almighty Allah. In it all powers adorn him, all lights illuminate him and all angels come to him. the Archangel Gabriel comes to him, and he is dressed with countless honors on this holy night. The angels ask forgiveness [from Allah for people] for the sake of the master of humanity (Sayyid al Bashar), to the Owner of creation (Rabb al-Ka'inat).
For his honor, may God forgive us and take away our bad states. May Allah change our conditions from bad to good and change everything in us to be for His Sake. May we be good servants, obedient servants, beloved servants, respected servants, praised servants. Try to be servants such as this. For that reason, attend humbly to worship on that night as our Beloved Prophet (SWS) directed us:
"Whosoever offers voluntary prayers during the Night of Power out of belief and expecting from Allah its reward will have his past sins forgiven." [Bukhari and Muslim] |
Now I would like to pray the Prayer of Recollection (salat ul-tasabih) to express a little bit of praising from our side to glorify our Lord Almighty Allah. That glorifying Allah Almighty in salat ul-tasabih consists four cycles of prayer (raka'ats) in which we are glorify our Lord 300 times by saying "Glory be to God, all praise be to God, there is no god but the One God Allah, God is Most Great!" (Ar. "Subhanallahi wal hamdulillahi wa la ilaha illa Allahu wa Allahu Akbar." May Allah Almighty glorify His beloved and most praised servant, Sayyidina Muhammad (S), and may mercy from His endless mercy oceans fall on you, and fall on our descendents, and fall on our ancestors, fall upon east and west, and may its blessing fall upon all from North to South, upon all oceans and upon all continents.
Allah Allah...Karim Allah...Aziz Allah...Subhan Allah...Sultan Allah Oh our Lord You are the only Sultan. Raise up Your Work and bring down the work of destructive disbelief and evil which seeks to harm Your human beings and all other creations by means of a destined appointed and authorized sultan from your Divine Presence.
Bihurmat al habeeb wa bi hurmat al fatiha.

Breaking the Fast in Ramadhan According to the Prophet (SWS)
The fast is broken at sunset, and it is termed in Arabic as Iftar. It is a time of happiness and refreshment after experiencing the pangs of hunger and thirst. It has been said the moments before opening the Fast, Allah Almighty is very close to His servants and any Dua made at this point sincerely will be granted Inshallah.
The Fast is usually broken with dates and in many cultures a light soup with bread or small side dishes. Breaking the fast is followed immediately by the evening obligatory prayer. In many parts of the world, including the US, breaking fast is observed in congregation in mosques and homes.
The Prophetic (SWS) etiquette of breaking fast: three rutabs (moist dates), or else tamr (dry dates), or else water, mentioning Allah, using the right hand, stating the du`a that fasting was for Allah and breakfast with his rizq (provision), and asking Allah aid in fasting, night-prayer, lowering the eyes, and guarding the tongue in Ramadan. The invocation (du`a) upon breaking fast is answered.
The following two du`as should be recited after breaking the fast:
اَللّهُمَّ لَكَ صُمْتُ وَعَلى رِزْقِكَ أَفْطَرْتُ
Allahumma laka sumtu wa `alaa rizqika aftartu
O Allah! For You have I fasted and upon Your sustenance have I broken my fast. [Abu Dawud]
ذَهَبَ الظَّمَأُ وَابْتَلَّتِ الْعُرُوقُ وَثَبَتَ الأَجْرُ إِنْ شَاءَ اللهُ
Dhahab az zamaa’u wab tallatil urooqu wa thabat al-ajru Insha-Allah
The thirst has vanished, the veins have been wetted and the reward is established - Insha-Allah. [Abu Dawud]
The Prophet (SWS) said: "Whosoever fasts experiences two joys. He is joyful when he breaks his fast, and is joyful because of his fasting when he meets his Lord." [Sahih Muslim]
"When evening approaches from this side (east) and the day retreats from this side (west) and the sun has set, the one who is fasting breaks his fast." [Bukhari and Muslim]
"Break your fast with a date, or with water because it is pure."
[Abu Dawud and Tirmidhi]
The Messenger of Allah, praise and peace be upon him, said: "My nation will remain in goodness as long as they break the fast as soon as it is due." [Muslim]
It is offensive and unhealthy to stuff the stomach with food after fasting. The Prophet (SWS) said: “Enough for a human being to have luqaymat (from 3 to 9 mouthfuls) that prop up his spine and, if he must have more [in his stomach], then one third of food, one third of water, and one third of air.”
Out of respect for the mosques and those who attend them among people, jinn, and angels foods that cause bad breath (such as garlic and onions), belching and gas should not be consumed.
Al-Hamdulillah, praise and peace be upon His Prophet Muhammad and on his Family, Companions and his Followers, inwardly and outwardly.
